Donna was born and raised in Beaverlodge, a small northern Alberta community. In her early years, she spent many hours drawing and making art with several mediums, and after taking her first formal course in oil painting in 1989, she realized that this was her medium of choice. Since then, she has taken numerous courses and went on to complete a Certificate of Visual Arts at the Grande Prairie Regional College.

Donna has approached most of her oil paintings in a “natural realistic” style. She has concentrated on creating colorful images of wild flowers and berries, most of which she finds close to her home near Grande Prairie, Alberta. She also enjoys painting landscapes and abstracts, allowing her to expand her genre and learn new techniquesFrom the beginning of Donna’s art career she has shown her paintings in solo and group exhibitions. She has won numerous awards including Best New Artist of 2001(Flat Work) at the Calgary Stampede Western Art Auction for“Saskatoon Time”.

Donna is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. She continues her vision of bringing nature to life in her paintings and regularly shows them in various venues. The images of some of her oil paintings have been used to make limited edition prints.

~ Artist’s Statement ~

My subject matter is part of God’s awesome and wonderful creation, from which I get my inspiration. The flowers, berries and other plant life, as well as the landscapes they flourish in, are all part of this beautiful world, where one only has to look around to feel inspired!

Many of my paintings depict a small part of nature, and yet, in that space, there are so many things happening: color, light, shadow, and plant parts that seem so tiny that it is hard to imagine how they could have been created. I strive to bring these details to life, in the hope that when viewed, the painting will inspire the people to see the world in a new light, and challenge them to go out and seek their own small part of the real world.

Lately I have expanded my genre to include abstracts and landscapes. This allows me to experience new and different techniques, colors, brushes and other aspects of the artistic world.

"Painting is my way of appreciating and enjoying the beauty of creation. It is my hope that, while I have found relaxation and fulfillment in completing a painting, others will find enjoyment viewing it.”
