Saskatoons grow at the edges of aspen forests, along ditches and in dry open areas throughout Alberta. White flowers appear in May and June which ripen to dark purple berries in July. Besides being delicious to eat right off the bush, the berries can be frozen or preserved for a mid-winter treat. These berries grow prolifically around my house near Grande Prairie. They are one of my favorite subjects to paint.
