About the Workshop
The workshop will focus on values and composition and capturing light with primary colors; ultramarine blue, cad red, and lemon yellow to paint a cohesive painting. You can work in oil or acrylics and can either follow along with Emily on a painting or choose your own reference and she will assist you.
Day 1
- Slideshow on masters compositions
- 60/30/10 rules
- different compositions 1/3 rule, fibonacci sequence, etc and how they can aid the painting
- Value sketches - need acrylic white and black paint and a sketchbook
Afternoon-
- Tone your canvas/board showing the difference in paintings depending on the color you choose for the underpainting
- Sketch out your painting keeping in mind your tonal sketch and composition
- Showing techniques to paint your oil painting in 2 days without creating mud (although I like a good “mud” in a painting too). Or if painting in acrylics, how to glaze to create layers
Day 2
- Continue with your painting and hopefully finish by end of the day.
- Demonstrations on techniques throughout the day
- how to create atmosphere
- how to pull together a painting
- when in doubt/ leave it out
- don’t be a slave to the photo
End of the day - gentle critique of work
Supply List
- Bring you own reference material/ or follow along with what Emily is painting (landscape).
- Sketchbook
- Brushes for your medium (a variety but at least these ones)
- 1inch brush,
- Round brushes
- At least one small detail brush
- Mop brush (if working in oils)
For oils, Emily suggest some of the stiffer brushes like hogs hair. For acrylics, she likes cheap Simply Simmons brushes. Emily is pretty tough on her brushes and doesn’t buy expensive brushes
- Acrylic (everyone bring this even if you are working in oils)
- White
- Black
- And 1 underpainting color (can be any transparent color you like, purple, orange, yellow, red) but if you are unsure bring warm transparent color like red iron oxide
- Then bring your choice of medium
- Titanium white
- Ultramarine blue
- Cad red
- Cad yellow
- Paynes grey
- Yellow ochre
Feel free to bring any other colours that you like and wish to work with. But these colours will make up most colours and will create a harmonious painting if you want a limited palate
- Paper towel (those blue shop towels are the best)
- Water container for acrylics
If you are working in oils also bring:
- Gamsol
- A medium you like to use ie: neo megilp, galkid, or liquin
