About the Workshop

Play and experiment to see how gray values unlock depth before leaping into bold, expressive color. You’ll bounce between free, intuitive mark-making and simple, structured studies—testing limited palettes, playful contrasts, and just how far a handful of colors can go.

Bring acrylic, gouache, or watercolor for the color work, and toss in extras~ pastels, inks, charcoal, or any favorite tools~ for some mixed-media fun. A suggested supply list will be sent out.

Day 1: From Gray to Play
  • Playful mark-making and gestural drawing.

  • Simple gray-scale studies (3–4 tones) using ink or charcoal.

  • Translating a gray study into a single-color version.

  • Adding a pop of accent color for contrast and mood.

  • Creating an expressive abstraction with that limited palette inspired from the studies.

  • Group sharing and reflection on what makes an abstracted image feel strong and impactful.

Day 2: From Color Strings to Color Stories
  • Academic Exercises: Mixing “color strings” and 'hue families' to understand the tonal and chroma range of a single hue.

  • Using one hue’s full range to paint a simple form (“color grisaille”).

  • Picking a limited palette (inspired by pinterest-style paint colour swatches).

  • Creating a larger, playful abstraction with that palette.

  • Group sharing and conversation about balancing structure and intuition.

This two day workshop will leave participants with;  fresh ways to experiment with mixed media, simple strategies for building depth with tone and color, a playful approach to abstraction that feels grounded, more confidence in both mark-making and color choices.
