About The BIG Workshop ~ Etching for everyone!
The three-day workshop will give participants the opportunity to explore a safer nontoxic method of etching. However, this workshop is not just about safer processes it is also about revealing the multitude of different approaches to making an etching. So, whether you are an artist who likes to work with fine detail or someone whose style isbroader and more expressive, within this workshop there will be a process to suit your style. Using found textures from your environment from woodgrain to textiles, leaves or feathers etc., you will be shown how these materials can be incorporated into an etching. Along with three safer ways of making aquatints you will also get the opportunity to incorporate photographs, marbling and text into your prints.
Day one will be the demo and experiment day. In the first half of the day, Andrew will show example prints of the very many ways to approach etching, along with demonstrations of each process. In the second part of the day, printmakers will get the opportunity to try some of the processes which they feel most valuable to their style ofworking using test plates of various metals.
Day two will be concentrating on one or two personal projects, developing prints. With Andrew’s help and advice printmakers will use their newly discovered techniques to develop an etching.
Day three is printing day. Many printmakers mistakenly feel that once the plate is etched the journey of discovery is almost over. But as Andrew will demonstrate with the various approaches to inking and printing an entire exhibition can be created from different images from a single plate.
Things to bring to the workshop:
- Any texture you think may be interesting to incorporate into a print as mentioned above.
- Some preliminary ideas in drawing and or photographs of ideas you would like to
- develop as an etching, and something for writing notes (there will be handouts given out as part of the workshop.)
In printmaking there is no such thing as a mistake, just a happy accident!
Please note that all timings above may be subject to change as the workshop evolves. Andrew will be giving an Artist’s talk on Friday 5th September. It would be beneficial to all participants of the workshop to attend as it will provide background and context.
