Euphemia McNaught Homestead near Beaverlodge, Alberta

Location - Euphemia McNaught Homestead, is designated as a Provincial Historical resource and is located south of the Town of Beaverlodge, Alberta on secondary highway 722. It is the home of legendary local artist Euphemia “Betty” McNaught. Betty was a Canadian impressionist painter who focused primarily on landscapes and pioneer lifestyles in Alberta.

 Workshop Objectives

  • To learn procedures and techniques for doing sketches and studies of an outdoor subject.
  • How to capture the proportions and characteristic of the chosen subject

Steps to this are:   

  1. Establish an eye level
  2. Decide on the main subject of your composition sketch .
  3. Do a quick thumbnail gestural sketch of this subject to try to capture the shapes and proportions with loose pencil strokes. A quick tonal study will also be helpful in describing the subject.

Supply list

  • Sketch Pad 9” x 12” minimum of good quality drawing paper
  • At least 3 good pencils: HB, 2B and 4B
  • A firm board for holding the sketch pad
  • A good Eraser
  • Comfortable small foldable stool to sit on depending on subject and location.
  • Instructor will supply a spray fixative to keep drawings from being smudged.

About Your Instructor

Marjorie was born in 1941 and grew up on a farm near Beaverlodge, Alberta in the Peace River Country. Her parents encouraged and nurtured her at an early age to appreciate art and nature. She took her formal training at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary where she received a Two Year General Art Diploma and completed  a 3rd year majoring in Commercial Art. The next seven years she worked as a Commercial Artist, followed by 23 years as a Free Lance Architectural Illustrator in Edmonton, Vancouver and On Vancouver Island. In 1993, Marjorie returned to Beaverlodge where she teaches classes and workshops in the Peace Country and exhibits and sells her work at local and regional shows. 

For many years Marjorie and her late husband George travelled extensively in Alberta and Northern B.C. camping, hiking and exploring. This experience greatly influenced her knowledge and appreciation for wilderness subjects. She continues to sketch and paint outdoors in her quest for interesting and challenging subjects. 

Her passion for detail, design, composition, colour and mood are obvious throughout her work. An appreciation for beauty and peace is evident in her choice of subjects.  She continues to study and research new techniques in order to improve her work. Marjories’ main medium is watercolour, but she is also proficient in oils, pencil and pen and ink. 

She has taken workshops with well known professionals such as Jack Reid, Robert Sinclair, Jean Peterson, Larry Cromwell, Karen Richter, Brent Laycock and Jerry Heine.
Due to her enthusiasm and knowledge, Marjorie is in demand as a teacher and continues to give workshops and encourage others to learn and appreciate art.  She has received many awards, prizes and honourable mentions In local and regional shows and has served as a Juror for Peace Country Regional Shows.

Marjorie is an active member of the Beaverlodge Art Society, the South Peace Art Society, the Peace Watercolour Society and the Centre for the Creative Arts Society of Grande Prairie. She served as a Founding member of the Art of the Peace Society and of the Peace River Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Since 2005, she has served on the Board of the McNaught Homestead Preservation Society and is currently Chair of the Arts Program Committee. 

Her work is available through the Beaverlodge Art and Culture Centre or by appointment at her Beaverlodge Studio.
Marjorie’s’ work can be found in local, private and corporate collections as well as across Canada, the United States and overseas. Cancellations

Registration fees are non-refundable. You may transfer your registration to another person if you are unable to attend, that person will pay the registration fee directly to you. FCA Peace River does not manage the transfer of payment between individuals. It is your responsibility to collect payment from the person you transfer your registration to.Contact either Workshop Coordinator -cparslow@pris.ca or kennethlaneartist@gmail.com to see if there is anyone on the waiting list. Peace River Chapter of the FCA reserves the right to cancel the workshop in the event that a minimum number of registrations is not met. In the event that the PRFCA needs to cancel, you will receive a full refund. 

Waitlist

If this workshop is sold out, your name will be added to the waitlist. If we have a last minute cancellation, our Workshop Coordinator will contact you. If you still want to attend, you will pay the registration fees directly to the person who is cancelling their registration. FCA Peace River does not refund demonstration or workshop fees, or manage the transfer of payment between individuals.
