 About the Workshop

This 3-day workshop is designed for artists seeking to deepen their understanding of abstraction through the lens of mark-making. This workshop encourages participants to explore innovative approaches to creating dynamic, meaningful artwork while expanding their technical skills and creative intuition.

Participants will engage in hands-on activities such as guided mark-making exercises and experimental painting sessions using acrylics. Key elements include the exploration of the 7 elements of design and the principles of abstraction, interwoven with art history insights and peer discussions. Each day blends structured lessons and opportunities for personal expression during open studio time.

By combining foundational techniques with the freedom to explore their artistic voice, participants will come away with both technical confidence and a renewed sense of inspiration.

Workshop Objectives:

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Explore the Fundamentals of Abstraction: Develop an understanding of mark-making strategies to create compelling abstract artwork.
  • Strengthen Artistic Voice: Learn to apply design elements and critique methods to refine their work and express their unique creative perspective.

Planned Activities:

  • Mark-Making Explorations: Hands-on exercises to build confidence in abstract expression.

  • Application of Design Elements: Focused sessions on integrating the 7 elements of design—line, shape, form, texture, value, space, and color—into abstract artwork.

  • Art History & Inspiration: Slideshows and discussions on the origins of abstraction and contemporary examples to provide historical context and spark ideas.

  • Critique and Reflection: Guided group and self-critiques to develop critical thinking and refine individual approaches to art-making.

  • Open Studio Time: Opportunities to freely paint and incorporate workshop concepts into personal projects with instructor support.

About Your Instructor

Canadian Abstract Painter Selected as One of 24 Artists to Collect in 2024 by Saatchi Art

"My latest body of work, “West of Yours,” delves into the intricate dance between translucency and opacity, using layers of oil paint to give life to abstract compositions. These paintings, a culmination of three years of exploration, feature organic shapes drawn from blind contour sketches of ferns, bark, barnacles and shells found in the lush West Coast rainforest and the Pacific Ocean that envelopes my home on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, Canada.

The stencils, created out of these natural forms, provide a connection point to my surroundings. They also create a capsule for vibrant colour to radiate. While the hues may initially appear unrelated to the forest or ocean, a closer look in nature reveals the presence of pinks, purples, and bright oranges. This palette challenges conventional perceptions of the wild; inviting viewers to explore the hidden beauty within the familiar. My attempt is not to create a mimetic representation of the wild, but to visualize my own lived experience with the forest and at the ocean, I liken the process to writing a song or poem.

I often oscillate between my attraction to create the beauty found in my natural landscape and the awareness of the strife present in our political landscape. In these times, I am compelled to reflect on the purpose of beauty itself. What role does it play in our lives? Is it frivolous or does it serve a deeper purpose? These questions guide my artistic exploration, inviting viewers to join me in this ongoing conversation."
